19th May '09 - Debit Cards Popular 'For Spending What You Have'

People are taking a sensible debt management approach by only spending what they have, rather than borrowing, one sector commentator asserts.According to Neil Munroe, external affairs director at Equifax, such a responsible attempt at debt management reflects the cautious attitude that many Brits have taken during the credit crunch.
"We are seeing a switch which to my mind reflects a cautious consumer probably spending what they have got more than what they are expecting in the future," he states.
His comments come after the UK Payments Association APACS found that debit cards accounted for almost three-quarters of all purchases on the plastic in the first quarter of 2009.
This is up by nearly two per cent from the same time last year, which could reflect the importance that debt management has taken during the current unstable economic climate.
Furthermore, the British Retail Consortium says internet, mail-order and telephone sales in April were 12.5 per cent higher than a year ago, with many people turning to online bargains to support their debt management.
