18th May '09 - 'Not As Many Repossessions' As First Thought

Households which are struggling with their debt management could be less likely to lose their home. The Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) says that its previous prediction that 75,000 properties will be repossessed during 2009 now appears to be pessimistic.
Repossessions are on the rise as mortgage and secured loan demands on debt management make meeting financial commitments almost impossible for some people.
But the number of homeowners faced with losing their houses are not rising as fast as first thought.
"Lenders genuinely want to help borrowers where borrowers are committed to working with them. It is quite clear that the number of arrears cases is rising far more markedly than the number of repossessions," comments CML director-general Michael Coogan.
And the Citizens Advice Bureau claims that despite steps forward, more could be done by lenders to help their borrowers meet their debt management responsibilities and they should come up with a payment strategy with their customers.
